Field type change from decimal to string

Field type change from decimal to string is not possible in a form and is there any rational behind it, can we do it at all?

The only way to do this is to delete the old field first once deleted create a new field with the same name.

If you have some data in the existing field, please copy in some temporary field and then delete the field create new field and copy the data from temp to new field.
