Looking for a structured roadmap to learn and practice ServiceNow scripting

Hi everyone,

I’m currently learning ServiceNow and have covered the basics. I’m now starting with JavaScript and ServiceNow scripting and want to get more hands-on practice in my PDI.

I’m planning to work towards the CAD certification and would like some advice on:

1) What JavaScript concepts should I focus on first?

2)What order should I learn things like Client Scripts, Business Rules, GlideRecord, GlideForm, Script Includes, etc.?

3)What are some good projects or exercises I can build in my PDI to practice?

I'd start with JavaScript basics like variables, functions, arrays, objects, loops, conditions, and JSON. After that, I'd go with GlideForm and Client Scripts, then GlideSystem, GlideRecord, Business Rules, Script Includes, and finally GlideAjax.

For PDI practice, build small exercises around each topic. Make fields mandatory based on conditions, query and update records with GlideRecord, automate something with a Business Rule, then try using GlideAjax with a Script Include to retrieve data from the server.

I'd also recommend Tim Woodruff's The ServiceNow Development Handbook. It has a lot of useful scripting practices and helps you understand how to structure ServiceNow development beyond just learning the APIs. I've added a screenshot of the book as well.

If you know the ServiceNow basics, I’d suggest learning JavaScript and ServiceNow scripting together.

Javascript: Focus on variables, conditions, loops, functions, arrays, objects, and common array/string methods.

ServiceNow order:
JavaScript → GlideRecord → Business Rules → Client Scripts/GlideForm → UI Policies → Script Includes → GlideAjax → UI Actions → REST/Integrations.

PDI practice: Build a small application and implement form validation, auto-population, Business Rules, Script Includes, notifications, Flow Designer, and ACLs.

For CAD, focus more on when and why to use each scripting component, not just syntax. Hands-on PDI practice is the best approach.

1. Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.
