Domain Name character limit

How have folks worked around the limitations of the domain field being restricted to 40 characters when you have a company with a name longer than 40 characters? Do you just abbreviate? How do you remain consistent between all companies if some require abbreviation and some don't?

Lastly, does anyone know if the domain picker can be configured to display something other than the domain name? (i.e. an abbreviation?)

In our current scenario, we are following a fixed Naming convention. 5 letters in the beginning and then a name which might denote something and it's consistent. 

The field is set to accept it in this same format. So 5 letters are constant for a particular region. 

It can be configured to display other than domain , but it's not recommended often. Well dictionary override is always a choice, depending on requirements.

I know it’s not a great idea, but you can increase the field size of the domain name to 60/65 and use it. The domain picker picks the name you mentioned while creating the domain, so both can’t be different.
