Management Role

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a ServiceNow developer with 3+ years of experience, mainly in ITSM, integrations, and scripting (Business Rules, Script Includes, Flow Designer, REST APIs).

I’m now looking to transition into a more management-oriented role within the ServiceNow ecosystem, such as a Team Lead, Product Owner, or Delivery Manager.

I’d really appreciate guidance from those who’ve made a similar move:

  • What key skills should I focus on to successfully transition from a developer to a management role?
  • Which roles are the most practical stepping stones from a developer position?
  • Are there any common challenges or mistakes to watch out for during this shift?

Additionally, in my current role, what kind of responsibilities should I proactively take up to prepare myself (e.g., leading modules, stakeholder communication, sprint planning)?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

The mgt roles you mention all have their own focus/skill. Did you check the paths on NowUniversity? PO has one for sure. The modules there can guide you to see what is needed.

If you want to make the step from DEV to mgt, you really need to take lead. It's also very depending on what kind of step it is going to be. Do you want to move up within your current employment, or do you want to leave and start somewhere else in the new role?

Common pitfall: keep doing what you are doing and taking on the new responsibilities on top of that. That won't work. You have to trust the people that are doing the work.
