ESS Portal/Catalog Redesign

Hi all,
We are in the process of completely redesigning out companies catalog. Redefining all of the categories, items, and overall making it a more user friendly experience. While we are going through this process, we are going to tie in re-creating and re-designing our ESS portal and again try to create the most user friendly experience possible.
I personally have never gone through such a process, and I am curious if others out there have any suggestions on strategy for this. What processes did you follow? Where there any lessons learned? Is there anything you would have done differently? What resources are available to make this as effective as possible?
We currently have all of IT (incidents, changes, requests), facilities work orders, and in the future hope to get HR and marketing, so we would like to make this expandable.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
