Isela found a future with more purpose and time for her family
Isela Phelps was working two jobs to make ends meet, both as a full-time student advisor and a part-time knitting designer. Now, she has a rewarding career as a ServiceNow developer. Despite having no prior technical experience, Isela now helps stakeholders streamline their workflows, leveraging her existing customer service skills gained as an advisor to build productive relationships. She’s achieved the financial stability and work-life balance she once thought impossible, giving her time to focus on what’s most important to her—raising her daughter.
Isela found purpose and balance, and so can you. Start your career journey in the ServiceNow ecosystem today.
Juggling two jobs and motherhood - until one opportunity changed it all
Seven years ago, Isela was juggling two jobs, working 40 hours a week as a student advisor at Utah State University and an additional 20 hours at home as a knitting designer. This left her with little time for her newborn daughter, who was—and still is—the most important part of her life. She had no technical knowledge, but she wanted to create a better future for her family. Isela found her opportunity when Utah State University opened up a ServiceNow apprentice role. The position didn’t require technical skills, and it valued her exceptional customer service experience as a student advisor and ability to build relationships. Isela took the leap and applied.
Finding a supportive community to build her skills and confidence
Isela says she felt overwhelmed at first, but she credits Utah State for providing the support she needed to succeed. Her first ServiceNow Knowledge conference was a turning point, where she gained valuable insights, connected with experts, and discovered the wealth of resources available in the ServiceNow Community. Seven years later, Isela is a senior ServiceNow Developer at Utah State, collaborating with stakeholders to improve workflows across the university. She’s also a Certified System Administrator (CSA) and is considering becoming a Certified Technical Architect (CTA), the pinnacle of ServiceNow technical achievement.
More than a job: a career that gave her life back
Isela says that her ServiceNow career gives her exciting new challenges every day. She loves ServiceNow technology, and she helps people, which gives her a real sense of purpose. And, perhaps most importantly for Isela, she’s been able to quit that second job and spend time on her number one priority—bringing up her daughter. According to Isala, even though she used to do her knitwear designer job from home, she really didn’t have time to spend with her daughter because she was working. Now, her evenings and weekends are free, which has allowed her to be the best possible mother she can be.
You don't need tech skills - just the drive to keep learning
If you want to build a successful ServiceNow career but don’t have any technical skills, Isela offers the following advice. First, think about your transferable skills like she did—they’re more valuable than you think, so don’t assume you need technical experience. Second, focus on continuous learning. That’s what Isela does, including going to every Knowledge conference and constantly learning about new ServiceNow capabilities. She says this is the biggest thing she can do to deliver solutions that help her customers succeed.
Every journey begins with a single step. It’s time to start your career journey in the ServiceNow ecosystem.
