Use Case:
Numerous customers have established a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) within the ServiceNow environment; however, the maturity level of these CMDB is suboptimal. What strategies can be employed to enhance CMDB maturity, and what specific actions should I undertake in my role as a technician?
Description:
Many customers aim to enhance the maturity of their Configuration Management Database (CMDB) but often lack clarity on how to assess its current maturity level. Several key channels are available for measurement:
1. Compliance, Correctness, and Completeness Score
2. ServiceNow Health Scan Report
3. CMDB CI Relationship Score
4. CMDB Adoption Report
5. Duplicate CIs Report
6. Report of Stale CIs
The aforementioned reports are instrumental in evaluating your CMDB maturity. It is beneficial to understand which reports facilitate this assessment and what actions can be taken to improve the CMDB maturity score.
Solution:
To address the challenges associated with your Configuration Management Database (CMDB), ServiceNow offers a robust feature known as 'CMDB Workspace.' This capability consolidates all necessary functionalities and access into a single interface. The workspace is underpinned by five key pillars that contribute to enhancing overall maturity. Furthermore, it is advisable to implement the Common Service Data Model (CSDM) framework in its latest version and to align the target state with the out-of-the-box (OOB) standards provided by ServiceNow.
Pillar -1: Identification
It assists in identifying Duplicate Configuration Items (CIs) and Stale CIs, which are those that have not been updated recently. It also facilitates de-duplication tasks to address issues related to duplicate CIs. Furthermore, It provides insights into the CMDB Health Score, which encompasses aspects such as Completeness, Correctness, and Compliance reports. Additional critical CMDB elements that require attention will be clearly highlighted and communicated to the technician.
Pillar -2: Governance
Governance involves identifying the various stakeholders and delineating the specific responsibilities each stakeholder must undertake. This framework is essential for maintaining data accuracy consistently.
Pillar -3: CMDB 360
This component facilitates comprehensive governance at a granular level. It aids in identifying data discrepancies, configuration items (CIs) that have not been reported by the data source, the number of discovery sources, and reconciled CIs.
Pillar -4: Insights
The subsequent reports are instrumental in enhancing CMDB adoption. They outline the necessary steps to elevate the current score. Each element is linked to specific dashboards and reports, facilitating straightforward navigation to the relevant tables and actionable items.
1. Data Ingestion
2. Data Governance
3. Search & Analytics
Pillar -5: Management
The subsequent four primary tools facilitate data management for Configuration Management Database (CMDB) Configuration Items (CIs).
1. Manage - This tool is responsible for defining and overseeing data management policies.
2. Optimize - It addresses CMDB Remediation Rules, Health Scans, and Foundation Reports.
3. Visualize - This tool manages Dependency Views and Query Builder components within the CMDB environment.
4. Create - It is utilized for developing Application Services, Technical Services, and constructing business applications.
