CI and Asset Management

I'm looking for a way to present a simplified report to some end users that will allow them to manage the retirement date and scheduled retirement date of some assets in alm_hardware. In order to sort for the data needed for the project, they have a need to filter assets by their CI's Operating System and a few other values.

The issue that I'm running into, is when dot-walking the alm_hardware fields for retired date and scheduled retired date into the cmdb_ci_server columns, they are not editable (assuming because they came from the dot walk).

If I try to report via the alm_hardware and dot walk into the required fields for cmdb_ci_server, I can edit the alm_hardware fields. However, I can't bring have the interactive filter sort correctly on the Operating System (assuming because it's an extended field). What's the best practice with this situation and/or is there an easy alternative I'm overlooking?
