Has anyone created entirely new CI base class instead of subclassing exsiting classes?

Has anyone created entirely new CI base class (extending from cmdb_ci) instead of subclassing other exsiting classes? If yes, can you please share your use case.

What table does the CI base class actually refer to? cmdb or cmdb_ci

I extended cmdb_ci because it doesn't exist OOTB if you want to manage documents as CI.
