Like seemingly everyone, I'm doing my best to learn more about AI and how to use it in my day-to-day operations effectively. I'm just at the start of this journey, but I figured that the developer blog would be the perfect place to document small tips and tricks I picked up along the way.
The first tip came to me by happenstance as I was scrolling through TikTok and it pertained to the crafting of prompts. While the creator, Kyle Balmer, was specifically speaking about AI in the form of Chat GPT, I intend to experiment with this tip on Now Assist as well. He asserts that one of the most effective ways to craft an AI prompt is to follow the RISEN framework. This framework allows us to properly niche down our request so that the end results are closer to our expectations.
R - Role
The first step is to define the role that the AI is playing, which without definition could be anything. This can be done by simply writing, "Act as..." and then inserting the title or job needed to fulfill the request.
I - Instructions
The second step is where you provide the AI with instructions on what you want it to do. Typically, this is the only part of the RISEN framework that people do when delegating tasks to AI 🫣
S - Steps
The third part is an elaboration of step two. We're not just going to tell the AI what we want, but we are going to provide it with path to arrive there as if it were a person performing that task.
E - Expectation
The fourth step is conveying what we want the output to look like. If the AI is crafting a message, are we expecting a short blurb, a list, a haiku, a 5-paragraph essay, a novel?
N - Narrowing
The fifth and final step is to further narrow down your prompt as much as possible. Essentially, that is what each step of the RISEN framework does, but be as specific as possible. This is where you could include the type of "voice" you want the output to have (e.g. authoritative, empathetic), the length of the response, or even tailor the message for a specific demographic of recipient (e.g. "write this in a way appropriate for a 5-year old child").
Armed with the RISEN framework, leave a comment down below if you've found it has helped to create more effective AI responses. Oh! And if you strike gold prompt-wise, be sure to submit them to @Earl Duque's Prompt Library for JulAI 🥳
