Add to cart functionality in service portal

Hi All,
As per out of the box functionality, once any catalog item is added to "Save as draft" section and further if any changes like variable modification/item deactivation occurs, the system detects these changes and whenever the user opens the draft item it shows an error. 

Considering the same use case for add to cart, if an item is added to the cart and further if the item is deactivated, on checkout system throws and error. But if any variable modification is done and user unknowingly clicks on checkout, no validation is available at this point hence system raises an RITM. 

Has anyone worked on such use case before, it would be helpful to know if any logic can be implemented to avoid creation of RITMs if there is any modification done.
