Servicenow has a multi-instance architecture where each company has their own platform and dedicated database that offers high customization, data privacy and security which prevents cross-customer interference and has a shared infrastructure wherein the underlying hardware and software resources are shared among all customers but partitioned logically. All these instances are hosted on ServiceNow’s private cloud infrastructure and ServiceNow is responsible for managing the environment, supporting infrastructure, and vendor relationships.

Servicenow platform has different layers (from top to bottom)

1. Presentation Layer / User Interface Layer (Layer1):  It provides 3 different UIs for interacting with the now platform a) Now Platform UI b) Mobile Apps c) Service Portal . This layer displays the processed data and application outputs to the end-users.

2. Application Layer (Layer 2): Application Layer is built on the platform layer to deliver specific functionality, such as ITSM, HRSD, CSM, or custom applications. It utilizes the tools and data from the lower layers to create business value

3. Platform Layer (Layer 3): The platform layer provides the tools and framework to process the data stored in the data layer. It includes GlideFramework, Flow Designer and Integration Hub. It enables logic, automation and processing of data to meet business needs.

4. Database Layer (Layer 4): Servicenow uses MariaDB, a relational database to store all data. Each customer has a unique database schema for their instance.

Hi @Deepika Jain

ServiceNow is built on a flexible, multi-instance cloud architecture that enables organizations to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient digital workflows across the enterprise. It provides a strong foundation with its data model, automation engine, integration capabilities, and user experience layers — all designed for extensibility.

But platform capability alone doesn’t guarantee long-term success. How you design and scale your solutions makes all the difference. That’s where our Build It the Right Way framework comes in.

We've distilled years of experience into a practical set of architectural pillars that help platform teams build solutions that are not only powerful but also sustainable.

If you're exploring how to structure your ServiceNow architecture the right way, I recommend starting with this short video:
