We are beginning the effort to use barcoding in our Asset Management process.

We would like recommendations on scanner devices. Models and their pros / cons.

Any information will be much appreciated.

I think the bigger question is what happens once the scan is done. I've heard some really good things about AMI's asset management solution on platform.   You can check them out here:   AMI Asset Track

have you thought about using the   servicenow mobile apps and mobile device camera to scan?

Hi Robert,

I implemented QR-Coded stickers on assets four or five years ago. The technicians scanned the app with their smartphone and were redirected via URL to the relevant asset page in ServiceNow. From there they were able to manage assignation and status of assets. The process was simple: scan, read/edit, save.

The QR codes contained an URL like this:

https://myInstance.service-now.com/alm_asset_list.do?sysparm_query=asset_tag%3DMyAssetTag

At that time, the QR-Coded stickers were generated manually on a P-Touch printer.

By today's standards, this implementation would seems crude, as the native iOS and Android app implement this probably better, but the point is that all technicians have a smartphone or a tablet. Smartphones enable to scan + edit. This seems to be quite powerlful enough, without the need for dedicated hardware.

Any recommendations or advice on scanning devices for a distribution center. Tablets or phones might not be realistic or rugged enough for the job.
