Best Approach for Implementing CSDM in an Existing Service Mapping Environment

Hello Community,

We are currently planning to implement the Common Service Data Model (CSDM) in our ServiceNow environment and would appreciate guidance from organizations that have gone through a similar journey.

Our current state:

  • We have already completed and operationalized 600+ Application Services through Service Mapping.
  • These Application Services cover both on-premises and cloud-hosted applications.
  • Service maps are actively used, and we want to avoid any disruption to existing mappings, relationships, operational processes, and reporting

Our primary concern is how to introduce CSDM in a way that does not impact the existing 600+ completed Application Services and Service Maps.

We would appreciate insights on the following:

  1. What is the recommended approach for implementing CSDM in an environment where Service Mapping is already mature?
  2. Did you perform a phased adoption of CSDM, and if so, what sequence worked best (Foundation Data, Design, Manage Technical Services, Sell/Consume, etc.)?
  3. How did you handle the mapping of existing Application Services to CSDM-compliant entities such as Business Applications, Business Services, Technical Services, and Service Offerings?
  4. Were there any challenges related to CMDB relationships, Service Mapping, Discovery, or Event Management during the transition?
  5. What validations or assessments would you recommend before starting the CSDM implementation?
  6. Are there any lessons learned, best practices, or common pitfalls that we should be aware of?

Our goal is to achieve CSDM compliance while preserving the integrity of our existing Service Mapping implementation and minimizing rework.

Any recommendations, implementation experiences, or reference architectures would be greatly appreciated.
