Can't edit published catalog items

Hello,
We are unable to edit some catalog items in Catalog Builder. When attempting to open a catalog item in edit mode, it states "this item cannot be checked out. If it was just published, please try after some time". The catalog items were not recently published and/or updated. Also, as owners of the catalog items, we have the required role (catalog_builder_editor) to edit them. Does anyone happen to know what this error message means?
