The column names in the report come from the column names or variables in the table. Renaming something would be confusing if it did not match. E.g. someone looking at report is looking at column called Customer and on the web browser/UI/form it's called Caller. They are likely to ask "Where is the customer field?" Matching helps the user experience. If you need to say something else (e.g. customer in my example) then rename the variable or field label.

Hey Chuck, I have the same question, but my issue is related to column/screen space.
The column I'm displaying is a dot-walked value and the column header is "Target Go Live Date [Enhancement]". As this data is just a date, the column header is 300% wider than the data displayed. It looks awful to start (with too much white space), but also causes the user to have to horizontally scroll to see all the columns because of it's width.
All I need to do is remove the " [Enhancement]" portion. Is that possible? To apply a substring() somehow?
Thanks.
Bob.
