CSM states - can they automatically update based on the case being updated?

Here is a scenario that explains what I'm looking for.

 

Agent is working a case and needs additional info from the customer.  They change the state to Pending Customer and create an Additional Comment and submit the case.

 

The customer replies back to the notification email they received with their answer.  The case then gets updated by that email coming back to the case and changes the state to Pending Agent

 

Is this possible?
