Dashboard statistics

Hello everyone! I am very very new to SN! I am looking to find a way to generate statistics from the backend tables such as incidents so I can display them instantly onto the Dashboard content boxes that I have. Stats such as how many open, closed...etc. I see a lot of verbiage on what it is and whats recommended but do not actually see anything on how to do it. Thanks!

Example of what I have: Content box on the Dashboard that has a link connected to the Incident tables. I want to add a small mini box onto the Content box showing some of stats for the Incidents right off the bat and use that as a link to the back end data.

There's an out-of-box reporting engine that you can use to run simple reports:
