Difference between upstream and downstream

Could anyone please explain me the difference between upstream and downstream in CMDB. Any example?

You can visual upstream/downstream by the BSM map. Here is the example in the wiki:

If you look at the Windows Server sannm-01, downstream is VMWare@sandb01 and sandb01. Everything to the left is upstream.



Another example CI:Cisco Switch. Downstream might be other switches, or desktops. Upstream might be Router


or Windows Server: downstream is dbase running on the server, or Exchange server running on the server. Upstream might be a switch or router.

I am quite new to the CMDB, could you tell me what exactly is the meaning of upstream and downstream here?  


Upstream: Describes the logical process flow or physical connection in which one item is "first" or above" another.



Downstream: Describes the logical process flow or physical connection in which one item is "below" another.
