General Asset data entry question

I've been struggling with this for a while.

Occasionally, our asset management group needs to manually enter devices into our CMDB.

In order to complete the process, they need to do the following steps

  1. Enter the relevant data in the Hardware screen, which then creates a default configuration item.

  2. After submitting the device, they find the data just entered and open the CI record.

  3. Here they enter the serial number and update the record.

  4. Finally, from the Stockroom or hardware asset view, they need to edit the serial number field, enter any value and save the record.

I'm confused on why a manual entry requires so much editing.  i would think that when you enter the values from the hardware view(e.g. Serial Number), that the system would copy the appropriate values to the configuration item and the database views would show accordingly after submitting the record.

Has anyone encountered this and could point me to where/how to correct this.
**For larger orders, I can successfully import data using transform maps.

Asset-CI sync is based on model categories and corresponding field mappings. OOB serial number on [alm_hardware] does not seem to be read-only and an existing serial_number<-->serial_number mapping already exists.

Seems like it is a configuration on your instance so it would be good to understand why the change has been made and go from there. The platform exists to facilitate work not hinder it
