HMTL Emails - Outlook - advice

Does anyone have and good advice, or better still emails (the actual HTML code layout / structure) that will work and look nice that are HTML formatted and work with Outlook.

I have taken the Evergreen Email Layouts from the share site and made a number of modifications to suite our needs and make it a little more dynamic - all good

I was testing and my client is Outlook 2010 and they all looked OK to me.

I forwarded onto a reviewer and I was told "there is a lot of white space".   i checked and there is the odd bit, so some more tweaking (read, added MS tweaks to fix known issues) and I removed those and it looked "tighter".   Still looks good in my client and in the browsers too.

I checked wtih a colleague who has a Mac and he was seeing all the extra spacing still - huh

i logon to OWA and indeed, all the formatting is all over the place - spacing added here there and everywhere and it is not at all pretty.

This evening I have just reworked this to use a number of DIV's instead and while testing I can see it now looks great in my OWA, but in my Outook 2010 and it is even worse that the badly spaced ones I started with

i am just glad that at the moment I am tweaking a page to see how it looks and replacin the HTML in a processed email and resending - opposed to having rewritten a lot of code

The code I have is CSS based as the original evergreen stuff is pretty old school HTML tagging which is not too great these days..... he says...

Any assistance would be appreciated

OK, I had a look at what Michael sent me and it was quite useful.   Afraid it did not help with my immediate requirements without a lot of reworking, but on the upside good to see a few of the ideas I have implemented have been incorporated here too

In the end I created an email in OL2010 that had the look and feel I wanted and made sure it looked good in OWA as well as a couple of other clients.

I then took that source and updated the core template sections I have.

Net result is that it now works, looks OK, but boy does it generate messy HTML. but then again, so does Outlook.

One thing to note for anyone.   If you have a long line in a field (so say an URL) then most other browsers and indeed even OWA will auto wrap and respect the table splits.   OL2010 and OL2016 do not due to their poor HTML engine.

To get around this you need to add a table-layout:fixed as a style to the table and then to the td entries add the word-break:break-all style

a few more tests this afternoon on the main task tables and i have now moved to using this for the breaks

word-break:break-word;overflow-wrap:break-word;word-wrap:break-word;

i may yet consider adding the break-all to a hyperlink if I find one that goes wrong

Microsoft still utilizes VML (Vector Markup Language) in Outlook for legacy versions of IE and Outlook. This is what causes email notifications generated from SN to have their formatting changed.

The following article has helped me with my email notifications, where it allows the actual formats I create to show in Outlook:

Even though the posting above has to do with CSS buttons not rendering properly in Outlook, the VML that needs to be added to the email notification allows general emails to render properly.
