How can I communicate between 2 portal widgets?

I have a widget that shows a bunch of groups in a dropdown input and I want to on selection activate 3 other widgets to show data related to the selected group in the first widget.
Guessing this is quite basic but I cant find anything helping me.

You can embed three widgets and pass a shared array of the groups to them from the parent Widget.
jeff.pierce has shared a good and fun guide to demonstrate that.
