How to add ---Please Select---option under a select box variable on catalog item AND keep the field Mandatory?

Hi what if I want the field to be mandatory while "--Please select---" is displayed, instead of "--None--? I don't want it counted as a selection choice, field to remain in a mandatory state?  Once I added  "--Please select--" as one of the choices, the whole field became not mandatory, since it counts this selection as a choice selected. How do I add that option and keep the field mandatory until some other selection is made? Thank you

hey i have the same questions, but according to the business requirement we need only particular choices for the variable right. SO if we add another choice(-- please select--) does that affect  any or is there any other way around for this. For me when im using the select box its picking up the first choice immediately i dnt want that to happen instead it should be any empty choice
