I'm not entirely sure what your specific use case is, but speaking as a Business Process Consultant (BPC), here’s my initial thought:
If you're showing the approval button, it should only be available based on the user's role. If the approval task is not assigned to the user, then how can that user approve the request or record?
Also, keep in mind that the portal is designed to serve as the homepage for approvers—so they shouldn't need to go into the native view to take action.
