How to log the transaction of api will success or failure

Hi Team,

Whenever an update is sent to a third party through an "API call the Success/Failure" of the transaction should be logged.

How i can achieve the above one any idea ? 

REST API , IMPORT SET both way how to get those details and I need to send out the emails on the basis of logs.
