how to modify the default value in reference field type on the table form

currently, can see that Demand is linked with project as below- 

if we look at the above screenshot, in the project field, we can see the name of the project and from there we can move to project record. However, here I want to show the project number instead of name. can anyone suggest how it is being controlled ??

You can Configure->Form Layout on the Demand table and expand the Project field and then add the number field to the demand form.
