How to save user preference?

I am designing a widget where the user will select an option through the drop-down filter. Let us say this drop down has option 1, option 2 and option 3. When a user logs in he/she chooses option 3. Next time when the user logs in, by default option 3 should appear in the filter. How can we do this?
