Hi @BoHyun Jung ,

The service mapping process is partially included in the discovery process within ServiceNow, but it's not entirely synonymous. Here's a breakdown:

Discovery:

  • Focuses on identifying and gathering information about IT infrastructure components like servers, applications, network devices, and more.
  • Utilizes various methods like ping sweeps, SNMP scans, and agent installations.
  • Creates Configuration Items (CIs) in the ServiceNow CMDB to represent these discovered components.

Service Mapping:

  • Leverages the data collected through discovery to build a visual representation of how CIs interact with each other to deliver services.
  • Employs different mapping methods like pattern-based, tag-based, traffic-based, and Predictive Intelligence.
  • Creates Service Maps that show dependencies, relationships, and service flows across the IT landscape.

Relationship between Discovery and Service Mapping:

  • Discovery provides the raw data: The CIs and their attributes discovered by the discovery process are the foundation for service mapping.
  • Service Mapping builds on top of discovery: It takes the discovered CIs and uses them to create relationships, dependencies, and service flows to paint a clearer picture of service delivery.
  • Service Mapping is not just discovery with visualization: It involves analyzing the discovered data, identifying patterns, and applying logic to build accurate service maps.

Therefore, while discovery lays the groundwork by identifying and gathering data, service mapping takes it a step further by transforming that data into a comprehensive and actionable representation of service delivery.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Some ServiceNow discovery tools can automatically trigger service mapping based on predefined configurations.
  • Not all discovered CIs are relevant for service mapping, and additional filtering may be necessary.
  • Service mapping can be performed continuously or at specific intervals to reflect changes in the IT environment.
