Modifying Duration for all Project Child Task

Hello All,

I am posting this here to see if anyone has any ideas.

My company is implementing Project Management. Sometimes the project duration needs to be changed. I know that SNOW looks at automatic calculation from bottom to top (Smallest child task to biggest) but when you have 100+ project task it is time consuming to go through each task and change the duration for each one.

Using this project as an example.

Our goal would be, to be able to modify the Parent Task, duration. Then that roles down to the child task and shortens the duration for each one.

I am testing a script that goes through each child task and modifies the duration (sooner or later) but am wondering if anyone else has come into this situation before.

TY!

That's not project management though.  The point of PM is to manage the cost, schedule, and scope of all the uniquely assignable work on the many teams involved.  What you want to model is something akin to "We want to deploy ServiceNow, but make everything happen in 10 days"... then have hte system arbitrarily say "this thing that NEEDS to be 7 days now only had 1.5".

If the amount of Project Tasks is too broad to do assessment on their durations, then perhaps the Project Tasks are too granular.

Uncle Rob,

I appreciate the quick response, but I find this answer a bit frustrating.

This IS Project Management. We are using this to manage every new store that we are building, remodeling, etc.. This involves several teams getting task that involve staging servers, managing designs, low/high voltage infostructures.

We have each project built out in templates to last ~90 days (66 days not including weekends and holidays) but to say that each project will take exactly that long is absurd. Sometimes we have to move the project up or back depending on outside forces (Say the lot we want to work on gets flooded or etc..). Now the task that you had that had a duration of 5 days, now only has 3 days.

As for the amount of task, we are still in the walking stage of getting this all put together and some task will be combined maybe taking it down to ~60 but that is not the point of this. The amount of task should not matter.

This is a frustrating answer because SNOW should not be YOU HAVE TO USE IT THIS WAY or don't use it at all, type of software. People use SNOW because of its ability to be customized in the way that the company seems fit.

I know I can do what I want to do giving the manager a UI action that will run a script that shortens/lengthens the duration for all the child task but I was wondering if anyone else has found a different solution to this. Not, no you can't and shouldn't.

I am relaying what upper management wants to see and trying to find the best solution for them.
