Shoheb, Thank you for posting this question with a great description of the implications you hit. I was going to reply with the solution we use ( create a user named auditor with a role, read-only, etc ) when I decided to test it first.
Imagine my surprise when I ran a test and found that the auditor role could indeed update an incident record.
I have since disabled that user and will seek to find a better way.

Yeah, same experience. That's why the one-two punch (Auditor_Role_v1.2.xml and snc_read_only_role) worked for us.
