Task-based reference Field, how to show short_description instead of number

We have a custom form that has an Incident Reference field and understand that it shows the incident number instead of short description.  We are also aware that the current dictionary of the Incident form has the number field as the default display value, meaning that by default, showing the incident number is the default (and intended) behavior.

However, the owners of this custom form want to change the reference field to show Short Description instead of Incident Number.  This is because the form itself is used in a report that is skimmed by a third party application.  However this application is having a problem with reading the short description and the owners of the form would like it if we could change the display attribute to show the short_description instead of number.  Obviously we cannot change the display value so we are trying to find an alternative.

Before you can say "why don't you do incident dot walking" we already tried this and the application is unable to properly read dotwalked values so they have asked if there was any way to display the short description just for this one form.

The Integration application that we are using to read the report does not support dot walking fields due to syntax issues.  This is a known issue with the developer of the application and they have indicated that they will not fix this issue.
