Tree Picker for Reference field in service portal

Hi Experts,
We have a requirement to implement tree picker in service portal. When we add tree_picker attribute it works fine in legacy snow instance but in service portal, it shows as the dropdown . I know this is OOB behaviour.
But anyone has implemented the tree picker in a similar way as in backend system. Like field with reference icon and when a user clicks on the icon , a popup window with tree structure should be displayed.
Kindly let me know if anyone has done the same.
P.S: I have already seen that link (Setting Tree picker for a reference variable doesnt work properly in the service portal page
