Unable to Search Columns in List View

Occasionally, I'll be unable  to click the magnifying glass to do a search of the columns in List View - it is greyed out. It appears to happen randomly. I've even been able to get around it by changing the current filter on the table, and suddenly I could seach again.

What could be causing this? I haven't noticed any consistency with issue. Any help is greatly appreciated!
