What are the main difference between 'stage' and 'state'?

I understand 'stage' is set in the workflow, and is responsible for closing out the request. But you can also set the state in the workflow and on the form. Does anyone know what the main purpose of the 'state' field is and any best practices around it? Should I be setting the stage AND state in my workflows?
Thanks!

stage is like current status of the workflow as mentioned by Deepak and coming to state is nothing but current status of your record (any record like incident, problem, change, req, task etc..).
