If you have a assignment group as mandatory in Parent table(Task) table the same applies to Child table/Extended tables.
If you want specific field type to change without impacting the parent table then you can do Dictionary override for that particular table as per your requirement. It won't impact the parent table.

Navigate to Dictionary of that particular field, scroll down you will find the Dictionary override and define your funcitonality.
