One of those issues that looks straightforward but can easily consume hours of troubleshooting.

The Scenario

You create an Integer field in DEV and successfully move it to UAT using an Update Set.

Later, you realize the field should actually be a String field.

You change the field type in DEV, capture the change in a new Update Set, and move it to UAT.

During Preview, you encounter:

"Type conversion is not allowed from Integer to String."

Even skipping the update does not resolve the issue.

What's Really Happening?

The dictionary entry already exists in UAT as an Integer field. More importantly, records may already contain values stored under that Integer definition.

When ServiceNow attempts to apply the new String definition, the existing data and dictionary configuration can prevent the platform from processing the change.

The Fix

In a non-production environment where the data is not required:

  •  Identify and delete the records that contain values in the Integer field.
  •  Preview the Update Set again.
  •  Commit the Update Set.

Once the conflicting data is removed, the dictionary update can be processed successfully, and the Preview error disappears.

Key Takeaway

When troubleshooting dictionary field type changes, don't focus only on the field definition. Always check whether existing records contain data stored using the previous field type.

Sometimes the issue isn't the Update Set itself. It's the data already sitting behind the field.
