Our customer is asking for a 'free text field'. Something they can use to enter reminders for themselves, so they can easily see from the list layout what the progress is, or what their next action is. Something they can use for themselves.
What would the OOTB solution be for this?

There is no OOB field present for this in incident table.
User can update things in work notes field, but the text will be not visible in the list layout.
You have to create a custom field for this requirement.

If only we could empty the 'User input' field from the list view. That would have been the best OOTB field

Hello,
We used Tasks for this. So a user could create a child task to a ticket in which he then would write his working informations and reminders, set a date on which it has to be finished and even link to a task to follow the current one. This is done with a little bit of customizastion, especially if you should be able to see only your own tasks, but it is pretty close to oob. I would not add another field to the incident table, since it would not be possible to have different personal notes for each contributer.
tl:dr -> you can use the oob child tasks for this.
Greetings
Fabian
