Pre-production environment Change Management

I'm curious to know how ServiceNOW manages pre-production environment Change Management.

Viewed through 2 lenses...

Is a Change created for each environment deploy...ie dev/test/qa/prd?

OR

Is it controlled through the CMDB and CI lifecycle as the Change matures towards Production...CI lifecycle state mapped to a process or environment?

That is more of a process question then a system question.  For example at one placed I worked he had to put in a change for each environment.  At another place I worked we only put changes against Dev if we were building a new server.

Thx for the input...my follow-up question then is for the environment specific change did you associate the PRD 'Operational' CI to that pre-production change OR did you have a pre-production CI, specific to that environment?

We're still "building" our CMDB catalog, but have implemented Change Management.  Now looking to more tightly couple the CMDB CI's with Change Management.  Do we lean more towards CMDB processes or Change Management processes or is there a recommended happy medium?

For us we had CI for both prod and non-prod.  For example if I was doing development work in ServiceNow and was ready to move it to test I would put in a change against the ServiceNow - Test CI.  Once approved I would then move my update set into test.  I would leave the change open until I got the UAT results back say everything was good.  Then I could close the change and open a new one for the CI ServiceNow - Prod.  Hope this helps.

Hi Matt

I agree with @Brian Lancaster matter of process and also maturity of the organisation in handling change management. Both scenarios are covered by the platform.

For instance you can cover them using ITSM baseline OR in case you have ITSM pro to orchestrate and control any phase of the deploy of new environments.

I definitely suggest to have a look to Dev Ops application available in ServiceNow
