Employee Center Best practices Clone vs. OOB for pages

Hello,

What are the best practices for customizing the Employee Center? We know to NOT modif OOB widgets, instead clone OOB widgets and modify them as necessary. What about pages? Does the same apply to pages? Clone a page and use the cloned widgets on the cloned pages?

Does this set of best practices apply to Employee Center since it is using the same portal technology?

Hey @zynsn

So a really nice out of the box feature is Topic Templates

This allows you to create a 'suite' of page layouts or designs, that can then be easily selected for a topic.

It's effectively cloning the OOTB page and allowing you to change, but sits nicely within the framework and gives you good flexibility for Topic pages that may need to look different.

I consider this configuration as opposed to customisation, as you are using the framework provided by the platform. So while you should never really change the provided OOTB page, you can simply use this framework to create pages for topics as you need.

In regards to that Best Practice link, it's probably worth just calling out it's not an Official post from our Product teams, but from reading it, it does have some good guidance and suggestions.

Are you just starting out with building a new Employee Center?

Well best of luck, it's a pretty nice enhancement from Service Portals in my opinion.

Feel free to hit-up this community if you have any questions or need help, plenty of folks from ServiceNow like myself or customers who are happy to help.

Be cool for you to share your Employee Center when your done 🙂
