Camunda vs. ServiceNow

Customers sometimes will shy away from investing in ServiceNow because it does not seem like the right fit for them. Some reasons include:

  1. A platform may feel like a monolith
  2. Vendor lock-in
  3. Pricing
  4. Reduced freedom in architecture

Several companies are using Camunda as an alternative to manage the flow of work. I think there may be good arguments for Camunda. However, I advise customers to analyse total cost of ownership and time to market for new features when deciding against ServiceNow.

The diagram shows field service management with Camunda and the familiar NOW platform.

On the left, motives for reason 4 are revealed. If you want to choose the technology for integrations and the tool for inventory management, you may decide against ServiceNow. For me, an enterprise application platform obviously is the way to go. Use point solutions only if they are real differentiators. Key questions thus are: how do you replace point solutions when introducing ServiceNow into a grown information system landscape?
