From my interpretation, this linked to the relationships between the entities and thus what is inherited or shared between them. 

More commonly explained in the CMDB where you have mappings of dependent elements but the same can be applied to the GRC elements. 

Think of it as a Parent / Child relationship. 

In normal terms, you can think of the "flow" down from upstream to downstream e.g. inheritance from the parent to the child. 

However, you might also think of it as "dependent upon" whereby the "upstream" entities are dependent upon the "downstream" entities being there.
