Publish hardware models to catalog (Pro and Cons)

Hi All,
Our client wants to use 1 single catalog created to request any hardware model required but we are proposing the OOB way to publish model to catalog and have a common workflow attached to all the catalog items.
Can someone provide us with the pros and cons with both the approach?

Hi @OlaN
The reason why client wants to avoid publishing multiple models to catalog is they want to have a single catalog for ordering any model available (ease of ordering), with multiple models on catalog they don't want end users to navigate through categories and find the model before requesting the same.

In that case someone would have to populate a variable or something similar on the Catalog item to help determine which item should be ordered.
How else would they know if the end user requested Computer A or Computer B ?
Such a setup would take time to set up and maintain, given that items will change over time.

Yes now you got it, you just listed one such con of not going ahead with OOB way of publishing models to catalog. I know one another that vendor catalog cannot be associated with the catalog if we have a single catalog as the vendor catalog is tied to product catalog.
On similar lines I am looking for other pros and cons of not publishing models to catalog from other people experiences.

A con to not publishing the model to the catalog is that you will not be able to source the request to see what you have in inventory for that model. Instead, that would be a manual effort.
You can accomplish the requirement by:
1) Publishing each of the models to the catalog (which requires that you select a catalog item category)
2) Remove the previously selected catalog item category (so the item is not visible to users within the catalog)
3) Create an order guide
4) Add each catalog item to the order guide's rule base.
Users can then select the model they would like, and the OOB way of publishing is still leveraged.
