In today's fast-paced IT landscape, seamless integrations between monitoring tools and IT service management platforms are crucial for keeping systems running smoothly. One of the most powerful integrations is ServiceNow Integration with SolarWinds, which allows for automated event management and incident resolution. Whether you're a seasoned IT professional or just starting to explore the world of ServiceNow, understanding how to integrate SolarWinds for event management is key to improving operational efficiency.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process of integrating ServiceNow with SolarWinds for efficient event management. From setting up basic credentials to configuring the necessary event rules, this step-by-step tutorial will help you streamline your workflows and automate incident creation. Let’s dive into how you can easily set up ServiceNow Event Management Integrations with SolarWinds.

Step-by-Step Guide to ServiceNow Integration with SolarWinds for Event Management

Integrating SolarWinds with ServiceNow for event management helps organizations automatically capture and manage IT events. By connecting these two platforms, you can ensure that incidents are generated and tracked automatically, improving incident response times and service uptime.

Step 1: Set Up Basic Credentials in ServiceNow

Before you can start integrating SolarWinds with ServiceNow, you need to create basic credentials for SolarWinds in ServiceNow. These credentials authenticate the connection between both systems.

  1. Go to Discovery settings in ServiceNow.

  2. Create Basic Auth Credentials for SolarWinds.

    • Username: admin

    • Password: event1ETC

  3. Save the credentials for later use in the SolarWinds connector setup.

Step 2: Configure the SolarWinds Connector in ServiceNow

To link SolarWinds with ServiceNow for event management, the next step is to configure the SolarWinds connector.

  1. Navigate to the Service Operations Workspace in ServiceNow.

  2. Open the Integration Launchpad and search for the SolarWinds Connector.

  3. Configure the connector with the following:

    • Connector Name: SolarWinds EVNTMGMT

    • Host IP: Enter the SolarWinds server’s IP address.

    • Credentials: Select the basic credentials you created earlier.

  4. Test the connection to ensure it’s successful.

  5. Once the connection is confirmed, click Save to complete the configuration.

Step 3: Enable Missing CI Generation in SolarWinds Connector

In many cases, events from SolarWinds can generate events for missing Configuration Items (CIs). By default, the system will not generate events for missing CIs. You can change this setting to enable event generation for missing CIs.

  1. Go to the SolarWinds Connector configuration page.

  2. Find the Generate Missing CIs option and set it to True.

  3. Save the changes to enable the feature.

Step 4: Test the SolarWinds Integration and Event Generation

After configuring the connector, it’s time to test the integration and ensure that events from SolarWinds are correctly captured in ServiceNow.

  1. Navigate to the All Events table in ServiceNow.

  2. Wait for 120 seconds (default event collection interval) to allow SolarWinds to send events to ServiceNow.

  3. Apply a filter to the All Events table to check if SolarWinds events are being generated.

  4. Verify that all event details like description, severity, and status are properly populated.

Step 5: Apply Event Management Rules and Field Mappings

Once events are captured, they need to be processed according to predefined event management rules and field mappings in ServiceNow. Out-of-the-box event management rules map the incoming SolarWinds events to the appropriate severity and status.

  1. Go to the Event Management Rules page.

  2. Ensure that the SolarWinds Node Status rule is active, which triggers when SolarWinds events are received.

  3. Review the Field Mappings to confirm that SolarWinds event fields like node, status, and severity are correctly mapped to ServiceNow event fields.

  4. Modify the mappings if necessary, especially if you need custom regular expressions (regex) to extract additional details from the event description.

Step 6: Configure Event Severity Mappings

SolarWinds events often need to have their severity mapped correctly in ServiceNow. For instance, an event with a “down” status might need to be mapped to critical severity.

  1. Open the Event Rules configuration page.

  2. Modify the severity mapping for various events such as down, unreachable, and warning.

    • For example, you might set down events to severity 1 (Critical).

  3. Test the changes by simulating event processing to ensure that the severity is updated correctly in the event record.

Step 7: SNMP Traps Integration (Optional)

In addition to direct integration with SolarWinds, SNMP traps can be used to trigger events in ServiceNow. This method is especially useful when dealing with legacy monitoring tools.

  1. Set up the SNMP Trap Listener on your mid server.

  2. Enable listening on UDP Port 162 or 162 (based on your configuration).

  3. Provide the mid server IP to the customer so that they can configure their monitoring system to send SNMP traps to ServiceNow.

  4. Test the integration by simulating an SNMP trap to ensure it’s captured correctly.

Step 8: Automate Incident Creation from Events

Once the events are captured and mapped, you can configure alert management rules to automatically create incidents in ServiceNow based on the events.

  1. Open the Alert Management Rule configuration.

  2. Define the conditions under which an event should trigger an incident.

    • For example, an event with critical severity should automatically create an incident.

  3. Run tests to confirm that incidents are being created as expected.

Step 9: Final Testing and Validation

Now that the integration is set up, you should perform a comprehensive test to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

  1. Generate different types of events in SolarWinds (e.g., node down, unreachable).

  2. Check the All Events table in ServiceNow to verify that all events are captured with the correct severity, description, and status.

  3. Ensure that incidents are automatically created when the appropriate event conditions are met.
