CSDM Definition on Managed by (group) and Owned by (user)

Hi all,

I am looking for a prescriptive description of an Owned by (user) and a Managed by (group).

In some 'hoover over hints' places in the system I see the Managed by (user) represents the Service Manager (on a Technical Service Offering for example).

What is represented by the Owned by (group)?

Who helps me out? Is this already prescribed somewhere (CSDM?)

Thanks,

I think you may find some help with this if you install the CSDM Dashboard product from the ServiceNow store.  It includes playbooks for maturing your CMDB (crawl, walk, run, fly); however, my take on it has always been that Owner & Manager (or Managed by Group) are at the IT level.  Who is responsible for the day to day management of the actual CI and who is responsible for the IT Spend for that CI.

Hi Curtis,

Thanks for your response. I am looking to a prescriptive definition of both attributes. I (!) made the following:

The Owned by (user) is overall responsible while the Managed by (group) is responsible for the day2day business.

Some examples:

Application Service:

  • Owned by is Service Owner responsible for all the aspects regarding the Application Service
  • Managed by is the Service Manager of the Application Service responsible for the day2day aspects of the Application Service service itself

Hardware Server:

  • Owned by is Service Owner responsible for all the aspects regarding the Hardware Server
  • Managed by is the Service Manager of the day2day aspects of the Hardware Server responsible for the Server service itself

What do you think? What does anybody else think? Is there already a prescriptive definition available?

Cheers,

Ed

Old thread, but useful question!
Stating the obvious, but Owned by is a named individual, whereas Managed by is a group.
I see no issue with the Owned by person also being a member of the Managed by group.
