Robust Transform Engine (RTE) in ServiceNow
What is RTE?
The Robust Transform Engine (RTE) transforms raw source data stored in staging tables into data that is mapped and integrated into the CMDB. RTE uses the ETL definitions created for the integration to carry out this transformation.
In short: RTE imports data from a data source and maps and transforms that data into multiple tables.
RTE is part of Integration Hub ETL.
What is Integration Hub ETL ?
Integration Hub ETL in ServiceNow is a low-code, wizard-style interface and framework used to Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) third-party external data into the ServiceNow Configuration Management Database (CMDB) or supported non-CMDB tables.
How to define an RTE
Navigate to Robust Import Set Transformers and fill in the following details:
- Name
- Source table: first create an import (staging) table, then select that table here
- Batch size
- Verbose: enables import logs
- Transformation definition
Defining the transformation definition
There are two types of transformation definition:
- ETL definition (for non-CMDB tables)
- CMDB integration (for CMDB tables)
Creating an ETL definition
Step 1: Create the ETL entities
Create the first entity for your import table and name it "import" (leave its path empty).
If the data coming from the data source is dynamic rather than static, you can also add a temporary table after the import table.
Next, create five more ETL entities: Company, Location, Building, Floor and Room. In these entities you can mark fields as coalesce fields.
For this example, we are focusing on mapping one import table to multiple tables.
Step 2: Create the ETL entity mappings
Map the import entity to each target entity, mapping source fields to target fields:
- Import → Company
- Import → Location
- Import → Building
- Import → Floor
- Import → Room
Keep the ETL entity mappings in the proper order.
While creating the ETL entity mappings, you can also write a conditional script.
Problems you may face
- If even one field is mapped incorrectly, RTE will not process the data.
- When writing scripts, always use the path names of the fields.
Incorrect coalesce fields can prevent data from being inserted.
