In a large enterprise environment, servers may change IP addresses, hostnames, cloud instances may be recreated, and the same infrastructure may be discovered from multiple sources.
How should ServiceNow Discovery and IRE determine whether the discovered device is an existing CI or a new CI?
For example:
- What identification attributes should be considered authoritative?
- How should Discovery behave when hostname, IP address, or serial number changes?
- How should duplicate CIs discovered by different sources be prevented?
- When should Reconciliation Rules take precedence over Discovery data?
What approach do you recommend for designing Identification and Reconciliation rules in a large enterprise CMDB?

What identification attributes should be considered authoritative?
Answer : The Identification will depends on the unique attribute that is available for maximums CI of a class, For Example : For Computer Class or hardware, Serial Number is unique and Available and cannot be changes.
When should Reconciliation Rules take precedence over Discovery data?
Reconciliation Rules are configured based on Data and precedence for a source. Example You might want to populate assigned field from Intune and Operational System from SCCM. Then you need to create Reconciliation based on these fields. it depends on Which source is the correct and true to update the data into ServiceNow for Ci in the relevant Class.
How should Discovery behave when hostname, IP address, or serial number changes ?
Answer : The Discovery will rarely have any changes to Serial number and is one the most important identifiers. Based on Serial number the CI are identified and IP Hostnames are updated to CI Class based on Reconciliations rules.
How should duplicate CIs discovered by different sources be prevented?
Answer : IRE Rules Automatically creates Duplicate Task if configured properly. Use OOB feature for De Duplications.
