How to set Assignment Group on Alert based on Event Rule

Hi,

In Event Management, can the Assignment Group on an alert be set directly using an Event Rule, if we want to rely only on Event Rules and not use Alert Rules, scripts or business rules?

Can someone help me on this

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Hari S1 ,

1. If this property evt_mgmt.alert_groups_precedence doesn't present means, You need to manually create it manually.

  • Name: evt_mgmt.alert_groups_precedence

  • Type: string

  • Value: cmdb_ci_support_group, cmdb_ci_managed_by_group(it will first take the support_group value from CI for assignment group of alert, if it doesn't present, then it will take the managed_by_group value)

Note: if you want the managed_by_group value should taken first you may reverse the order like (cmdb_ci_managed_by_group, cmdb_ci_support_group)

2. You don't need to do any specific configuration is required in the Event Rule apart from enabling this property.

Hello @Hari S1
Event Rules in ServiceNow

  • Event Rules process incoming events and control how they are transformed into alerts.

  • They are mainly used to:

    • Create alerts from events

    • Set alert severity

    • Control alert correlation (suppression, aggregation, deduplication)

  • Event Rules do NOT have the capability to assign an Assignment Group directly on the alert.

  • Assignment Group Setting

    • To assign an alert to a specific group automatically, you must use Alert Rules.

    • Alert Rules allow you to:

      • Assign alerts to a group based on conditions

      • Set other alert fields like Priority or Owner

      • Work in conjunction with the event’s information processed by Event Rules

  • Alternative Approaches

    • If you want automated assignment without manual intervention, the following are possible:

      1. Alert Rules: Recommended and supported approach

      2. Business Rules / Scripts: Used for advanced assignment logic if Alert Rules cannot handle the condition
