Hi, need some inspiration for setting up a stockroom for a central warehouse in one building with a lot of racks in aisle, with shelf’s with pallets and separate areas for deployment, receiving etc.
-should I have one stockroom or should I have parent/child stockrooms for each rack/area
if one stockroom I would have many locations ( each rack, shelf, pallet), but hardware asset default to stockroom location?
if parent child, I see some challenges for the transfer order and handling total storage of equipment?
any recommendations is much appreciated
/Stig

When setting up a stockroom in ServiceNow for your central warehouse, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, you'll need to decide whether to have just one stockroom or to use parent/child stockrooms for different areas like racks and deployment zones.
If you opt for a single stockroom, it simplifies things since all your inventory will be managed under one roof. Each specific location within the warehouse, like racks or shelves, can be represented as sub-locations within this stockroom. When managing hardware assets, they'll automatically default to the stockroom, and you can specify their exact location as needed.
On the other hand, if you have a large warehouse with distinct areas, using parent/child stockrooms might make more sense. This approach allows you to create separate stockrooms for different sections of the warehouse, offering more detailed visibility into where assets are located.
However, there are some challenges to consider with this approach. Managing transfer orders between different stockrooms, for instance, might require more planning and coordination. Also, you'll need to ensure consistency in tracking inventory across various locations.
To make things easier, it's important to establish clear naming conventions for your stockroom locations and leverage ServiceNow's features like location hierarchy and inventory reporting. This will help streamline stockroom management and optimize inventory visibility.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on the size and complexity of your warehouse operations. It's a good idea to involve stakeholders and carefully assess your inventory management needs before making a decision.

This is an out-of-the-box feature that will be available starting from the Xanadu release. For more information, check out the documentation below:

Hi Stig,
As I have exactly the same questions about setting up a large stockroom with Aisles, Racks, Rack levels and Rack level positions and also with separate Stockroom sections like Incoming goods, Asset deployment, Asset Refurbishment, Outgoing goods and Main Warehouse.
Also we have the requirement to limit access to the separate sections to dedicated staff.
My ideas for now:
1. As we want to use the HAM Workspace as much as possible OOB, we will check to see if the Space attribute can be used also for Rack level and Rack position
2. We will add a mandatory field called 'Section' to the Stockroom table with a drop-down selector. In this way the applicable Stockroom section is always filled.
We will use this Stockroom_Section field within ACL's. The ACL's will be used in roles to enable a section based access (ie only assets within the section with user access are updatable)
I am curious about your idea's/ the way you are setting up your Stockroom(s). Please let me know!!
Many thanks,
Ed
