Tag based Service Mapping for On Premise

Hello EXperts,

Can any one please help in any step by step documentation for 'Tag Based Service Mapping' for On-Premise.

We have for cloud understood how to implement that as there are many articles and videos .

But specifically for On premise is it different ? 

1. DO we need to create Custom Patterns ? or something? to discover the tags?

2. Or we need to enhance at CMDB level to attach Tags to those devices.

Please suggest .
