How To - Top Down Service Mapping - YouTube
I recently took over the service mapping efforts at my company and had a follow up question about this Service Mapping video on Youtube. Specifically about utilizing Traffic Based mapping to compliment Pattern Based mapping.
So far we have just been using the traffic based connection suggestions to provide connection information when our application SME is unable to provide it (usually just the port number of a connection). We then use that information to help build a pattern for that connection, but it’s been extremely slow going and I’d like to ramp up our production.
In the video it states that the best practice for TB discovery is to use it at the initial stages of mapping and then turn it off once you have fine tuned the application service. Is that statement implying to add missing connections to the map from the connection suggestions without building/customizing a pattern to find that connection? Or is that implying to use connection suggestions the way we are currently? I guess I’m just a little confused as to how the map would stay dynamic and pull in any new CIs automatically in the event of a server upgrade/replacement occurring in between scheduled discovery runs without creating a pattern to find that connection.

As stated clearly Pattern Based Discovery is done to gather the Super Set of Data and Connections . It also brings the data/connections which may not impact the Application.
Once its done - You can enable Pattern based service mapping which is complemented by Service Now Horizontal Discovery. Pattern Based mapping do not create Patterns rather it uses existing patterns starting from Entry Point.
how the map would stay dynamic and pull in any new CIs automatically in the event of a server upgrade/replacement occurring in between scheduled discovery runs without creating a pattern to find that connection----> If Changes are done then It has to wait for next schedule to run. You can define schedule frequency based upon grouping of Application Criticality.
This Screen shot may give u some more idea.

Thanks for the reply Rahul, I understand that the map doesn't update until discovery is run again. My question was whether a map created using connection suggestions would automatically reflect any change to the infrastructure when discovery is run, or would we need to review each map and add any new connections manually through connection suggestions?

Traffic Based Mapping - Creates the connections n maps.
Traffic Based Mapping with ML - Creates application Finger Prints and it needs your intervention to add/remove the suggested Connections.
